My Nan taught me to sew when I was 4. She had me make little hankies.
At first I sat on her lap and she showed me how I must guide the fabric and once i got that, she let me go with the pedal. She got the pedal and had no thread in the machine and made me press the pedal to show the speed and of course that cautionary tale that I think was every Nans fav, about losing fingers. She then went on to let me at the pedal but without thread and fabric. Once I suppose she thought I was ok with it she let me sew paper, that is without thread. She drew lines on the paper long straight ones, swervy ones and then I must have steped up to fabric. I always went to her place in the holidays and we would sew hankies or sheets for our dolls. Eventually we, me and my sister helped her sew for her business, which back then was sewing the jerseys for the locals footy club. She'd go crook when we stuck the jersy number on wrong, well we for only 5 and 6 by then and I thought thats the way 3's went. Teaching kids young can be a joy.
