brother sewing machine

I have recently aquired a brother sewing machine. I have threaded the machine and bobbin, and it sews when I turn the wheel manually. When I try the pedal, it doesn't move the needle. I can hear the innards working, and the light is on, but no sewing. HELP!! I am a novice!
