Default one step buttonhole

I am just about to make my first piece of clothing, a pair of pyjama pants which brought up another question. On the pants I need to make buttonholes for the ties. On a one step buttonhole machine would I need to find a button which would approx. make the size hole I needed or would I still be able to make one without a button?
