Default I'm confused-->seams of tangled thread. Please help...

I'm new to sewing and I don't understand why the back/underside seam of what I sew (on a Brother FS-40) has a bunch of jumbled, tangled thread. When I finish a seam and pull out the fabric, the thread from the bobbin is coming out from under the feed dogs. Is this normal?

The machine is threaded correctly and the bobbin is in right--I've rethreaded and reset the bobbin a million times according to the manual...and I've played with the tension, but still, the thread on the bottom is tangled.

Any ideas??

Sorry if this is a stupid question...
